BayernBahn GmbH was founded in December 1987 as a subsidiary of the Bavarian Railway Museum.

The company was initially only intended for the management of the historic train service in the Nördlinger Ries, but it quickly developed into one of the first "young" private railway companies in Bavaria.
With the takeover of the Nördlingen - Dinkelsbühl - Dombühl and Nördlingen - Gunzenhausen routes, the foundation was laid for steady growth and the continuous development of new business areas. To this day, an important mainstay is the area of construction train traffic in southern Germany. In addition, BayernBahn is a specialist in taking on regional freight transport, particularly in the greater Munich – Nuremberg – Stuttgart area. The spectrum of BayernBahn ranges from personnel and shunting services, provision of suitable traction equipment to taking over the complete service on southern German railway lines.

In cooperation with partners, BayernBahn also acts as a provider of complex logistics services in national and international rail freight transport.
